How To Fix Wii U GamePad Stick Drift

 ·  Consoles, How To, Nintendo, Retrogaming, Videogames

The left analog stick on my old Wii U GamePad developed a bad case of drift. Once I moved the stick it would keep registering input in that direction – all the way left, all the way right – with nothing I could do to stop it. Games were unplayable.

Why it happens

The GamePad’s sticks read position from a pair of potentiometers under the pivoting stick housing. Grit, dust and skin oil work their way in over the years, and the contacts inside also wear. Either way the resistance reading shifts slightly off-centre even when the stick is at rest, and the console reads that as a direction you’re holding.

If the cause is contamination, you can often clear it without opening anything.

The quick fix: compressed air

  1. Confirm the drift – at rest, your character or cursor creeps on its own; after a stick movement, input keeps registering in that direction.
  2. Take a can of compressed air with the thin nozzle straw fitted. Keep the can upright and use short bursts – tilting it can spray liquid propellant into the mechanism.
  3. Push the affected stick fully over to one side. This opens a gap around the base of the stick.
  4. Blast air into that gap, working it all the way around the stick – a full 360°.
  5. Repeat with the stick pushed to the other extremes, and do the right stick too if it’s also drifting.
  6. Test in a game. On my unit this cleared it completely.

When compressed air isn’t enough

If it doesn’t help, or the drift comes back quickly, the potentiometer itself is worn rather than dirty. The fix then is to replace the stick module – replacement GamePad sticks are inexpensive and widely available, but fitting one means a full teardown of the GamePad. Flushing the mechanism with 99% isopropyl alcohol (worked in while rotating the stick, then left to dry fully) is a stronger version of the air trick and worth trying before you commit to that.
