I Supercharged This Old Mac for AAA Gaming

The Mac Pro 5,1

I wanted to see how far a 14-year-old Apple workstation could actually be pushed — not as a curiosity, but as a genuinely usable machine for modern AAA gaming.

Project Notes

Status Completed
Goal Turn a 14-year-old Mac Pro 5,1 into a machine capable of running current AAA games.

Picked up a Mac Pro 5,1 off eBay and tricked it out with modern graphics, SSD storage, and 48GB of RAM. The dual-socket Xeon tower turned out to be far more capable than its age suggests — the real work was in the GPU path: getting a modern AMD card recognized and running via OpenCore, well past what Apple ever officially supported on this hardware.

The full hardware specs and the reasoning behind the OS and GPU choices turned into their own rabbit hole — I wrote those up separately.
